Dr Michael Lloyd is a consultant psychiatrist with a special interest in perinatal and reproductive mental health. He works in both private practice and as a perinatal psychiatrist at a major metropolitan women’s hospital in Melbourne.

Dr Lloyd recognises that while pregnancy and early parenthood are often filled with joy, they can also be frequently associated with complex emotional, psychological, and physical challenges.

He provides specialist psychiatric care across the perinatal period, including preconception counselling on the use of psychotropic medications during pregnancy and breastfeeding, management of pre-existing mental health conditions during pregnancy, treatment of antenatal and postnatal mood and anxiety disorders, support for fertility-related psychological distress, and care following pregnancy complications or loss. He also assists with relationship difficulties and the often-overlooked challenges of adjustment to parenting.

Dr Lloyd adopts a compassionate, collaborative, and patient-centred approach to care. He places strong emphasis on understanding each individual within the broader context of their relationships, health concerns, occupational demands, and life stressors. His clinical work integrates evidence-based psychopharmacology with psychodynamic and developmental perspectives, with the aim of not only relieving distress but also supporting patients to move towards deeper meaning, balance, and wellbeing in their lives.

To ensure comprehensive and coordinated care during this critical period, Dr Lloyd works closely with obstetricians, midwives, general practitioners, psychologists, and other allied health professionals.

Additionally, Dr Lloyd has an interest in paternal mental health, supporting the psychological well-being of new and expectant fathers.

Background
Dr Lloyd initially trained and practised as a pharmacist in Melbourne, before obtaining his medical degree from the University of Queensland. He completed his junior medical training at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (QLD) and Western Health (Vic) before undertaking specialist psychiatric training at The Alfred Hospital. During his psychiatric training, he gained extensive experience in general adult psychiatry and was awarded advanced certificates in consultation-liaison psychiatry and addiction psychiatry.
In addition to his private practice, Dr Lloyd holds public hospital appointments in perinatal psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, and addiction medicine.
